English Oak
English Oak
The Pedunculate (Quercus robur), also known as the English Oak is a magnificent and beautiful tree. Although not the fastest of growers it will look good after 10 years and be really impressive after 20 years at about 20ft in height and grow up to 45m. In folklore the Oak was sacred to Greek, Roman and Celtic gods who had the power over thunder and lightning so was no coincidence that the Oak (being often the highest tree) would be struck by thunder and lightning.
An easy to grow tree which benefits from being replanted at this stage most of all – older oaks do not tend to grow as rapidly once replanted. Produces the classic acorn in clusters on a long stalk.
The current height of the trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.
- Plant in wet, dry, open and shady sites
- Likes most fertile soils
- Attracts squirrels and wildlife
- Native to the British Isles
